Recommended anchorage - Pomare Bay, Bay of Islands

Having anchored in different areas of Pomare Bay several times now I am really impressed with the holding and shelter available. One night in particular we had squalls gusting to 60 knots (sleepless night). Each anchor location has been on mud and the anchor well set.

A dull day for solar generation

Today was a consistently wet day with thick cloud cover (including thunderstorms) which impacts on the output from our solar array. We have two 390 W panels which each operate at 48 V.

Rainwater replenishing our water tanks!

Our water tanks have been at very low levels. This has made us think even more critically about water usage aboard. A basic calculation indicated we were consuming 30 L/day (15 L/person). I think we can reduce our average water consumption.

Boat jobs on anchor!

The weather has been no good for sailing so time to get on with some boat jobs. Two main things needed progressing. One being the installation of our Fusion sound system and two being install of more interior LED lights.

There’s a blow coming!

The morning started glassy calm in the anchorage. Our friends arrived late yesterday evening so after breakfast we rowed across and chatted. We had the boat ready to go and set off around 10 am.

Departed Jacks Bay at 9:30 am, promptly set full main sail and ran out of Manawaora bay toward Tapeka Point. Then set double reefed Genoa, sailing towards Moturua Island.

On the Hook at Assignation Cove, BOI

The last 36 hours has been a bit of a blur - unwell due to a cold or similar. Te Tāiko has swung happily at anchor. Behind the shelter of the 60 m tall bush clade hill we have seen little of the forecast winds.

This morning we cast off lines at Opua Marina where we saw out the winter of 2022. We departed the marina mid-tide but with little tidal flow.
