Lifelines

Upgrading our sailboats lifelines

March 12th, 2024

Lifelines have an important role on a sailboat because their purpose is to stop people falling overboard. Therefore, inspecting them regularly and making sure that they are fit for purpose, is crucial. For New Zealand registered boats wanting to sail offshore, owners and their boat have to comply with what is called Category 1 requirements (CAT 1). It is said that New Zealand is one of the strictest countries when it comes to CAT 1. For us, we can see the sense in complying with CAT 1. One CAT 1 requirements is lifelines have to be a particular diameter and be in good condition. Our lifelines were not compliant and we were unsure when they were last inspected and/or replaced. We were not surprised that they were in poor condition and they definitely needed replacing but their poor condition reminded us how important it is that everything (including the boat) remains in good working order and the importance of preventative maintenance.
