Taiko sailing to the Yasawa Islands

Sailing to the Yasawa Islands, Fiji

August 11th, 2024

The Yasawa Islands are well known for their pristine beaches and dramatic volcanic peaks. They consist of approximately 20 volcanic islands which stretch 80 km across Viti Levu’s northwest coast and are best known for where the film Blue Lagoon was filmed. Although these islands are considered remote, the number of resorts on the various islands means accessing them is made possible by flight or ferry but we’d be making our way by sailboat and sail the 30 nautical miles from Vuda Marina to the Yasawa’s southern most island, Waya Island. Our goal was to sail as far north as we could but this would prove to be difficult because the Yasawa Islands are generally very windy.

We had very few days of calm weather, with the two weeks at the Yasawas mostly spent hiding from strong winds, which meant we were wind-locked to Tāiko for most of our time there and unable to do many of the tourist attractions they are well known for.  We did enjoy our time visiting these islands and were taken by their natural beauty and stunning anchorages. Join us in this video as how our trip is actually going to go starts to unfold.
