Sailing from SAVUSAVU to the RAINBOW REEF, FIJI

July 21st, 2024

After sailing 1200 nautical miles from the Bay of Islands, New Zealand, we finally arrived in Savusavu, Fiji and since clearing customs, we have been waiting almost a week in Nawi Island Marina for our cruising permit. With cruising permit in hand, we did a quick reprovision of fresh fruit and vegetables from the local market in Savusavu, and we were now ready to untie the lines and start exploring this beautiful country.

Nawi Island Marina has to be one of the most beautiful marinas we have every visited. Besides its beauty, the staff are very welcoming and accommodating ensuring that our stay was as easy and as pleasant as it could be. This is going to sound a bit weird...but probably one of the best things we really enjoyed at Nawi Island Marina was their ablution block. Seriously! It was next level. The showers included toilets but it was all al fresco...well at least gave the impression that it was al fresco. Each shower was surrounded by tropical garden with a surrounding open air wall. It was incredible. The single toilets were the same!

We loved our time in Savusavu. It felt remote with limited access to things, which we absolutely love because it teaches us other ways of living and doing things. One of the things Adam really wanted to do while we were here is snorkel the Rainbow Reef. The Rainbow reef is approximately 30 miles long but only a 3 mile section is snorkelled/dived. It is considered one of the best diving locations in the Southern Pacific and the soft coral capital of the world. To do this, we would need to sail to Viani Bay on the eastern side of Vanua Levu, Fiji.

Join us as we finally leave the marina and set sail east to explore the Rainbow Reef.
